In addition to medications, there is a bevy of in-clinic and at-home treatments for hair thinning and hair loss to explore. But, before diving in, see a professional medical hair loss specialist to get a blood test, pull test, scalp biopsy, or light microscopy to rule out potential medical conditions that may be causing your hair loss. This will help ensure that you are on the right treatment path. Once you have cleared up any underlying medical conditions, you can proceed. To help simplify your hair regrowth journey, we have researched and broken down the various treatments for you here:

Surgical Hair Loss Treatment – The most permanent and invasive solution to hair loss is hair restoration surgery. It involves taking hair from elsewhere on the scalp and transplanting it to bald areas. Doctors may take an entire strip of skin from the back of the head where hair loss is least likely to occur or use more natural-looking micrografts or minigrafts, which are less noticeable than the original hair transplants from years before. Hair transplant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and is not covered by insurance as it is cosmetic. It is not for the faint of heart as it is painful, requiring pain medication to cope with the discomfort. In addition, it can leave the patient vulnerable to infection, bleeding, bruising, and swelling. Some patients require more than one surgery to achieve their desired look. Also, progressive hair loss will continue to occur, often leaving “plugs” at the front of the hairline, with a space or gap between the transplanted hair and the receding hairline.

Microneedling – Tiny needles are used to stimulate hair growth, as proven in a few studies.  It is found to be more effective when paired in-office with stem cells, PRP, corticosteroids, or at home with hair loss medications.

PRP - PRP refers to Platelet-Rich Plasma, which is derived by drawing your blood and placing it in a centrifuge to separate your plasma. Believed to be nutrient-rich, your plasma is injected directly into the scalp as part of a microneedling treatment. Note: The needles used for hair treatments are typically longer than those used for facial treatments.

Corticosteroids - Corticosteroids are injected into the scalp in thinning areas at four to eight-week intervals to help regrow hair in patients with patches of alopecia areata, which is different than hormonally induced hair loss (androgenic alopecia in women and men). This treatment was proven to regrow up to 50% of hair in 80% of the alopecia areata patients studied as soon as 12 weeks after treatment began. Studies have shown that some participants experienced improved hair density with fuller, thicker hair after using either device three times per week for six months. Long-term effects are not yet understood.

Laser Therapy - Low-level laser therapy includes at-home laser combs and caps that utilize red LED lights to address hereditary hair loss. Also known as cold laser therapy, it stimulates circulation and encourages hair follicles to regrow hair. This method may benefit those with alopecia areata, hereditary hair loss, and hair loss due to chemotherapy. It can also help increase overall hair strength and stimulate hair growth and healing after hair restoration transplant surgery. People often ask, “Is laser therapy or hair loss safe?” Studies indicate that it is safe, well-tolerated, painless, and less invasive than other procedures, with no side effects. However, it requires consistency and several weekly treatments for many months to see some hair growth. And unfortunately, not all who try this out see results.

Alma TED Hair Restoration – Alma TED is a new non invasive hair loss treatment that uses air pressure and low-frequency acoustic sound waves (ultrasound) to increase permeability and drive their medications into the dermis. TED stands for transepidermal delivery system, and, unlike microneedling and hair transplants, it is promoted as quick and pain-free, with no needles, discomfort, scalp trauma, or downtime. Their brand-specific serum is delivered with the handpiece that forces it into the hair follicle to anchor hair growth and prolong the anagen phase. It is theorized to work by increasing vascular dilation and blood flow that flushes out DHT and brings in new growth factors. The protocol consists of three treatments over three months, with results lasting about a year to be repeated annually. If your head of hair is no longer as thick or lush, this may be a good complement to daily scalp care. It can be used for alopecia areata and other types of hair loss, with some users reporting reduced inflammation, itchiness, and hair loss afterward. This needle-free hair restoration is still experimental and not foolproof – so it does not replace transplant surgery or serve as a proven alternative to PRP.
